How Long Does it Take to Put in a Gunite Pool?

New Pool Construction

A Gunite pool is one of the most significant and rewarding additions you can make to a North Jersey property. It is also a project that rewards careful planning, particularly when it comes to understanding the timeline. Construction involves multiple phases, each with its own dependencies and variables, and knowing how they fit together helps you approach the project with realistic expectations from the start.

The Overall Window

From the first day of construction to completion, most gunite pool builds take between 8 and 12 weeks. That range accounts for the variability that comes with any custom outdoor construction project. Design complexity, site conditions, material availability, weather, and contractor scheduling all influence where a specific project lands within that window. In North Jersey, permitting timelines and the active construction season mean that early planning consistently produces better outcomes than starting the conversation in spring when schedules are already filling up.

Design and Permitting: Before Construction Begins

The construction clock does not start until permits are approved, and in North Jersey that process can take anywhere from a few weeks to considerably longer depending on your municipality. Towns across Morris County and the surrounding area vary in how they process pool permits, and some jurisdictions involve zoning reviews, setback assessments, and other considerations that extend the timeline. Beginning the permitting process well ahead of your intended construction start is one of the most effective things you can do to keep the overall project on schedule.

During this phase, the pool design should be fully finalized. Surface materials, water features, lighting, automation, coping, and decking selections all need to be confirmed before work begins. Changes made after construction starts create delays and added cost that are entirely avoidable with thorough upfront planning.

Excavation

Once permits are approved and the site is laid out and marked, excavation moves quickly. Depending on pool size and yard accessibility, the dig typically takes one to two days. Soil conditions vary across North Jersey, and factors like clay content, groundwater, and site access all influence how smoothly this phase proceeds.

Steel and Plumbing

Following excavation, the steel rebar framework goes in. This is the structural skeleton that gives the gunite shell its shape and strength, and it must be set precisely before work can proceed. Plumbing lines are run concurrently, including suction and return lines, connections for any water features, and the runs to the equipment pad. Plan for one to two weeks for this phase depending on the size and complexity of the build.

Gunite Application and Curing

The gunite is applied to the steel framework in a single session by a specialized crew. Once the shell is in place, curing begins and takes approximately 28 days. The shell is wetted down regularly throughout this period to support proper curing. This is the longest single waiting period in the build and is not one that can be shortened without compromising the structural integrity of the finished pool.

Tile, Coping, and Decking

With the shell fully cured, finish work begins. Waterline tile is set, coping is installed around the perimeter, and decking material goes in around the pool. Material selection influences both the timeline and the finished look of the space. Plan for one to two weeks with some flexibility depending on scope and materials.

Interior Finish and Startup

The interior surface, whether plaster, quartz, or pebble aggregate, is applied as the final step before filling. The pool is filled immediately after application, and water chemistry is carefully managed through the startup period to protect the new surface as it cures. Your contractor will walk you through what the pool needs during this phase and what to monitor as the surface settles in.
