Is Your Pool Losing Water? How North Jersey Homeowners Can Spot a Leak Early

Pool Repairs

Water loss is something every pool owner deals with at some point. A certain amount of it is completely normal. Evaporation, splashing, and regular swimmer activity all contribute to a gradual decline in water level that requires occasional topping off throughout the season. What is not normal is a water level that drops faster than it should, consistently, regardless of weather or how much the pool has been used. When that pattern develops, a leak is the most likely cause, and identifying it early makes a significant difference in what the repair ultimately involves.

How to Tell the Difference

The challenge with identifying a leak is separating it from accelerated evaporation. A pool losing up to a quarter inch of water per day is generally within the normal range of evaporation, with the rate increasing during hot, dry, and windy stretches. Consistent losses beyond that threshold, particularly when they occur across different weather conditions, are worth investigating.

The bucket test is the most reliable starting point. Fill a bucket with pool water, place it on a submerged step so it sits partially in the water, and mark the water level on both the inside and outside. After 24 hours without running any water features, compare the two levels. If the pool has dropped significantly more than the bucket, evaporation alone is not the explanation. Running the test over two or three days gives you a more reliable result than a single measurement.

Where Leaks Commonly Originate

Pool leaks can develop in several places, and they are not always in locations that are immediately visible.

Underground plumbing is one of the most common and least obvious sources. Return lines, suction lines, and the connections between them can crack from ground movement, age, or the freeze-thaw stress that North Jersey winters put on buried infrastructure year after year. Water loss from an underground plumbing leak can be substantial before any surface evidence appears.

Equipment connections are another frequent area of concern. The fittings, seals, and unions around the pump, filter, heater, and valves experience ongoing wear and can begin to seep without producing obvious signs at first. Moisture, corrosion, or mineral deposits around the equipment pad are worth noting and following up on.

The pool shell itself can develop cracks over time, particularly around fittings, steps, and areas where ground movement has occurred. Vinyl liners can tear or pull away from skimmer faceplates, and gunite shells can develop hairline cracks that require professional inspection to identify accurately.

Skimmer and return fittings, where plumbing meets the pool wall, are also common leak points. These connections are subject to the same seasonal expansion and contraction as the surrounding structure and can loosen or crack over time, particularly in older pools.

Why Early Detection Saves Money

A pool leak that goes unaddressed does not stay at the same level of severity. Ongoing water loss erodes soil beneath and around the pool structure, which can destabilize the shell and surrounding deck over time. Equipment that operates while water levels are below normal can sustain damage from running outside its designed parameters. And the cost of replacing lost water and the chemicals dissolved in it accumulates quickly across an active North Jersey pool season.

What is a manageable repair when caught early can become a significantly more complex and expensive one if it is allowed to continue unchecked.

When to Call a Professional

If the bucket test points to a leak and a visual inspection of the equipment area does not identify an obvious source, professional leak detection is the right next step. Locating a leak in underground plumbing or within a pool shell requires specialized equipment and techniques that go well beyond what a visual check can provide.
